Hotel review: Manava Beach Resort & Spa, Moorea (French Polynesia)

Ah, Moorea… where turquoise lagoons meet dramatic peaks that look almost too green to be real. If you’re planning a trip to French Polynesia and want a touch of luxury, one question instantly arises: is an overwater bungalow worth the steep price? For our trip, I wanted 3 nights of luxury before switching to budget-friendly island guesthouses. Against all odds, I managed to book the last available Premium Overwater Bungalow at Manava Beach Resort during high season; it was pure beginner’s luck! In this post, I share my honest Manava Beach Resort & Spa review and explain how these three days defined my entire Moorea experience.

Why Manava?

When researching Moorea hotels, the options for luxury overwater bungalows narrow down to just three resorts. I picked Manava over the others for two practical reasons:

  • Full-Day Sunlight: Moorea’s dramatic mountains are stunning, but they block the sun quite early in the afternoon. The Sofitel resort ends up in the shade and under clouds hours before sunset. Manava doesn’t have this problem. Because it is on the northern coast, you get direct sunshine all day long.
  • Best Price-to-Performance Ratio: Compared to the international luxury chains, Manava Beach Resort offers authentic Polynesian charm and top-tier amenities at a much more reasonable rate. It also gets top marks for warm hospitality, a fantastic house reef, and being just a short walk from Maharepa village.

The Location

The resort sits on the north coast of Moorea, just a short 15-minute taxi ride from the ferry dock. We paid around 25€ each way for the transfer, which is pretty standard for Moorea. The resort can also arrange your transfer. Aside from the full-day sunshine, the location right next to Maharepa village is a massive plus. You can easily walk to a well-stocked supermarket, local souvenir shops, and several dining options. Having local food spots right outside your doorstep is great if you want to escape the expensive resort restaurant prices for a meal or two!

The rooms and bungalows

The resort offers 90 units, ranging from garden bungalows with private pools and beach bungalows to overwater units. All of them look beautiful, and if you don’t care about snorkeling right from your doorstep, the garden or beach options are perfectly fine. However, if you are a bit spoiled like me and want to jump straight into the ocean from your bed, it is absolutely worth paying extra for the Premium Overwater Bungalow.

Inside the Premium Overwater Bungalow

The bungalows are spacious and styled beautifully – luxury mixed with traditional Polynesian woodwork. The bed is huge and comfortable, and the bathroom is just as impressive. My absolute favorite feature inside the room is the glass floor window next to the bed. It lets you watch reef fish swim right under your room day and night!

What separates a Premium overwater bungalow from the standard ones is the view. You get an unobstructed view of the lagoon and the open ocean. The private sundeck has a ladder that leads directly into the water. One morning, a sea turtle casually swam right past our balcony, which was a magical moment I’ll never forget. The standard OW bungalows face the beach or the resort, meaning you have less privacy and the water underneath is much shallower.

The Beach & Activities

The resort features a large pool facing the beach, a small gym, and a spa. They also have a pool table and foosball, so you can easily keep yourself busy throughout the day. You can rent a kayak or stand-up paddleboard (SUP) free of charge, and they even lend out snorkeling gear. The edge of the deep lagoon is just a few paddle strokes away, and the view looking back at the resort and the dramatic mountains is simply magical.

P.S. If you happen to find my favorite sunglasses at the bottom of the lagoon, drop me a message – I’ll happily send you money for the best coffee in your hometown if you ship them back! 😉

The beach itself isn’t fantastic. It is clean, but rather small and not that typical, picture-perfect Polynesian paradise you see in brochures. However, the water is crystal clear, and there’s a pontoon right by the overwater bungalows where you can easily jump in and swim.

Dining

The Manava Beach Resort hosts two open-air restaurants. We had our breakfast at the main Mahana’i Restaurant, where the daily breakfast buffet was rich, varied, and very generous – perfect for fueling up before a long morning of snorkeling. Not to mention the view from the table – I think the picture says it all. Complimentary drinking water is provided 24/7, along with an in-room tea and espresso machine.

Twice a week, the resort also hosts traditional Tahitian dance performances during dinner. They serve a special Polynesian buffet on these nights, and the live drumming and storytelling add genuine cultural depth to the stay.

Anda’s rate: 9 out of 10

The bottom line: If you want the ultimate overwater bungalow experience in Moorea without completely breaking the bank, Manava is the perfect choice. You get full-day sunshine, an incredible house reef, and the convenience of Maharepa village just steps away. While the beach itself is small, jumping straight into the crystal-clear water from your premium bungalow makes up for everything. It was the perfect way to spend three days of luxury on the island.
