There is a saying in Slovenia that goes something like: “Nothing that comes from Tržič is good, not even the wind”. Well, there is always some truth in local jokes, can’t argue with that. Tržič is probably the last place that comes to your mind if you want to visit Slovenia. And I can’t blame you – the town itself is nothing special. However, if you want to visit Gorenjska region, Tržič just might be the place to settle down for a couple of days. After all, it is less than 30 minutes’ drive from Ljubljana airport, hence a good starting point to visit Bled, Bohinj, Kranjska Gora and Triglav National park. Whether you want to explore its surroundings, or […]
Slovenia is full of natural treasures and there are hundreds of activities waiting for you to try them out. If you are more of adrenaline type you can climb some pretty awesome mountains, go rafting in one of the most beautiful rivers or try out the steepest zipline in the world. I am talking about Planica zipline which is located in my home country Slovenia. I have tried it out in summer on a beautiful sunny day with not too much people around (that is actually a miracle!) and it was a great experience.
A few days ago, someone asked on Twitter: “Has anyone ever written an article about 5 things to do near Ljubljana Airport in case your flight is cancelled or delayed?” His Tweet got a huge response, but unfortunately mostly for the wrong reasons. If you want to know why, I’ll explain briefly in the next two paragraphs, but if you are only here for the “things to do” tips, just skip them and scroll down to “le big 5”.
I believe it is safe to say Gorenjska is the most beautiful region in Slovenia. If you visit Slovenia you definitely shouldn’t miss world famous Bled with the small island in the middle of the lake, its bigger brother Bohinj lake, Kranjska gora area, alpine valleys with scenic drives and waterfalls, not to mention the limitless hiking opportunities in Triglav national park. However, if you don’t have enough time to visit Gorenjska but you still want to feel the touch of beautiful Slovene nature, visiting Brdo Park near Ljubljana airport is a nice alternative. Brdo Estate is a perfect opportunity to stretch your legs if you have a few hours before your flight, or if you are staying close to […]
You know that thing about neighbors’ jealousy, how the grass is always greener on the other side? Well, I am pretty sure Slovenia has the greenest grass you have ever seen, but Croatia can definitely take all the credits for owning one of the best coastlines in the world. While Slovenia only has about 40 km of coastline, Croatia boasts with 1,800 km of diverse beaches, including thousands of islands and some really charming old towns like Dubrovnik (we all watched Game of Thrones, right?), Split and Opatija. Luckily, Opatija riviera is really close to Slovene border and it has become one of my favorite spots to relax on weekends. If you visit Slovenia and want to make a quick […]
In Slovenia we have a saying “Kovačeva kobila je vedno bosa” which means “The shoemaker’s children always go barefoot” (thank you Barbara for your help with translation 😉 ) I am a bit embarrassed to say I fit perfectly into this category – a global traveler and restless wanderlust who can’t see what lies in front of her eyes. And I am not only referring to Slovenia, my home country, which is in my opinion one of the most beautiful places on Earth, but literally my doorstep – the town I have been living in the past couple of years. Bornova pot (Born trail) is definitely something I should have done a long time ago! I swear this Sunday trip […]
Slovenia’s Karst region is known for its culinary delights, especially for its autochthonous red wine Teran and air-dried ham, called Prsut (Pršut). There are many guesthouses spread throughout the region, however the best ones are often booked far in advance during the season, from late May to early September. House Spacapan (originally in Slovene language: Špacapanova hiša) is known for its hospitality and culinary reputation so we chose to stay there during one of our “Slovenia weekend-escapes”. Location Guest house Spacapan is located in a small Karst town Komen, very close to the beautiful Stanjel castle which is “a must” visit for all architecture and nature lovers. Komen is really small and since Spacapan restaurant lies practically on the main […]
