It\u2019s a surreal landscape of endless horizons, rust-red dunes, and wildlife roaming through ancient deserts. After sorting out the practicalities of our road trip, this <strong>Namibia self-drive itinerary<\/strong> is the exact, unfiltered 14-day route we followed from Etosha down to Sossusvlei, with realistic driving times, where we stayed, and the mistakes we\u2019d fix if we did it again.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Our Route<\/h2>\n<p>Most self-drive itineraries in Namibia run in the opposite direction, tackling Sossusvlei first and saving Etosha for the grand finale. We decided to do the reverse circle. After a long overnight flight, we wanted a touch of luxury right at the start to decompress, and my priority was to &#8220;tick off&#8221; lions first. We intentionally left a couple of days open for improvisation (just in case we got a flat tire &#x1f609;), and as you&#8217;ll see day by day, I&#8217;ll point out where we could have stayed longer and where a day less would have been enough.<\/p>\n<h2>Day 1: Windhoek &#8211; Otjiwarongo<\/h2>\n<p>We landed late in the morning, and after picking up the car, we headed straight toward the north. We stopped at a Spar for groceries and spent our first night on the way. We didn&#8217;t want to drive too far, since we spent all night on the plane and were tired.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Driving:<\/strong> about 2 hours 50 minutes, 300 km<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stayed at:<\/strong> Out of Africa Town Lodge<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Don&#8217;t plan too much driving on the first day. Resting is always a good idea, especially since adjusting to driving on the left side of the road takes focus.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>Day 2: Otjiwarongo \u2192 Epacha Lodge (near Etosha)<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>From Otjiwarongo, we continued north, stopping for a great cappuccino at Outjo Bakery along the way (well worth the stop). We spent the afternoon relaxing by the pool, drinking beer and taking loads of selfies.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Driving:<\/strong> about 3 hours, 255 km<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stayed at:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelwithanda.com\/index.php\/2023\/05\/12\/lodge-review-epacha-game-lodge-spa-namibia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Epacha Game Lodge &amp; Spa<\/a> (3 nights)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tip:<\/strong> We booked three nights as a buffer in case we didn&#8217;t spot lions on our first Etosha game drive. Good insurance if wildlife sightings matter to you, but not strictly necessary if you&#8217;re lucky.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Day 3: Etosha National Park<\/h2>\n<p>We headed to Etosha very early, as we wanted to be there when the gate opened. As a lion lover, my only aim was to see the king or queen, and I got lucky! We saw a couple of cars looking in one direction, and there were 4 lionesses marching in the distance. Not as close as in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.travelwithanda.com\/index.php\/2024\/11\/14\/resort-review-vuyani-tented-camp-hoedspruit-south-africa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">private game reserve<\/a>, but perhaps even more magical. Throughout the day we also saw rhinos, elephants, and many common African animals \u2013 and my heart was full.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Entrance fee:<\/strong> $17 per adult, plus $3.70 per vehicle per day.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Duration:<\/strong> All day (gates close at sunset &#8211; times shift weekly, so check the posted time at the gate).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tip:<\/strong> There are also lodges inside the park, some located right at waterholes, reporting great animal sightings at dawn or dusk. Depending on your budget, it is well worth checking!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Day 4: Epacha, Rest Day<\/h2>\n<p>Epacha sits on a large private reserve with plenty of wildlife, though no lions. A leopard reportedly wanders through occasionally, but since it&#8217;s not a regular visitor, your chances to spot it are slim. We explored the property (they also have a sister lodge about a mile further), relaxed by the pool, and took a private sunset game drive with snacks and stunning views.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Tip:<\/strong> We could have skipped this \u00bbrest day\u00ab and continued our journey, but honestly &#8211; it felt good to just relax and do nothing. It would have been even better if we stayed in a lodge within Etosha and saw lions drinking from our private pool, though. \ud83d\ude00<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Day 5: Waterberg Plateau National Park<\/h2>\n<p>After breakfast (and the last night of luxury on the entire road trip), we drove to Waterberg for a short hike. For us, it was a sweaty and exciting* 40-minute round trip, with about 130 m of elevation gain. The panorama from the top is genuinely stunning. A great stop &#8211; don&#8217;t miss it if you&#8217;re a hiker or nature lover.<\/p>\n<p>*We had one very unwelcome close encounter with a black mamba. Luckily, she was faster than us.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Entrance fee:<\/strong> like Etosha (but we paid half as much in 2023).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Driving:<\/strong> about 4 hours, 300 km (the entire day)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stayed at:<\/strong> Omaruru Guest House<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Watch where you step on the trail &#8211; there are loads of mambas in Namibia. Also, always carry enough water on Namibian trails.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Day 6: Spitzkoppe<\/h2>\n<p>With granite peaks rising straight out of flat desert, Spitzkoppe is often called the &#8220;Matterhorn of Namibia&#8221;. It was a must-stop on our Namibian route, and I loved it. While it\u2019s a legendary spot for wild camping, we rented a tented cabin with a hot shower, which proved to be a great choice.<\/p>\n<p>We tried to find the summit route first thing in the morning but failed badly. \ud83d\ude00 Nevertheless, scrambling among the giant granite boulders on our own was reason enough. Alternatively, check out Bushman&#8217;s Paradise and its ancient San rock art &#8211; accessible only with a local guide (paid by tip).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Driving:<\/strong> about 3.5 hours, 265 km<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stayed at:<\/strong> Spitzkoppe Tented Camp &amp; Campsite<\/li>\n<li><strong>Entrance fee:<\/strong> Approximately $9\u201311 per adult per day, usually included in the camping rate.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Don&#8217;t try to be overly clever like us &#8211; pay a local guide to show you the way to the top!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Day 7: Cape Cross<\/h2>\n<p>Cape Cross sits north of Swakopmund, which meant taking a long, dusty detour along the coast to see the seal colony. Seeing thousands of fat, lazy seals sprawled across the rocks was definitely a sight, but the smell was &#8230; well, not as pleasant. Exhausted from the long drive, we could have easily skipped it, though it\u2019s probably a fun hit for most first-timers.<\/p>\n<p>On the way, we pulled over at <strong>Mile 72<\/strong> to check out a shipwreck and stretch our legs along the raw coast. Most travelers push further north into the Skeleton Coast, but with the ocean far too rough and freezing to swim, it just wasn&#8217;t our vibe. We decided to call it and headed back toward Swakopmund instead.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Driving:<\/strong> about 4 hours, 300 km<\/li>\n<li><strong>Entrance fee:<\/strong> like Etosha<\/li>\n<li><strong>Personal opinion:<\/strong> We paid much less in 2023, and compared to Etosha, this park is totally overpriced.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Days 8 &#8211; 9: Swakopmund and Walvis Bay<\/h2>\n<p>We reached Swakopmund late afternoon. It\u2019s such a charming and cozy town! Partly European seaside town, partly Malibu, partly something Irish or Dutch I still can&#8217;t quite name. The German colonial architecture and beer gardens are everywhere, as a leftover from Namibia&#8217;s colonial history. A great place to relax, eat seafood, and book adrenaline activities if that&#8217;s your thing.<\/p>\n<p>The next day, we climbed <strong>Dune 7<\/strong> &#8211; one of the highest sand dunes in the region. Climbing it is pure fun, but harder than it looks. Bring more water than you think you need, and prepare your camera roll for a serious workout. On our way, we passed Walvis Bay Harbour, home to a lively colony of pink pelicans. We picked up a local guide who drove us toward <strong>Sandwich Harbour<\/strong> along the famous &#8220;Where Blue Meets Desert&#8221; route. The fog rolled in so thick that it hid the dramatic views we\u2019d hoped for, and to top it off, we got briefly stuck in the deep sand. Total adventure!<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Stayed at:<\/strong> Hotel A la Mer, Swakopmund (3 nights)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Don&#8217;t attempt Sandwich Harbour on your own &#8211; go with a guide. Lower your tire pressure on soft sand sections for better grip; we learned that one the hard way.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Day 10: The Long Drive to Sesriem<\/h2>\n<p>We were facing a full day of driving south. We stopped for a picnic at a photogenic &#8220;hole in the rock&#8221; formation, crossed the <strong>Tropic of Capricorn sign<\/strong> (guess who\u2019s a Capricorn, too!), and passed through <strong>Solitaire<\/strong>\u00a0&#8211; famous for its rusted vintage cars scattered in the desert. That night was our first time actually sleeping in the rooftop tent, simply because it was the absolute closest spot to the entrance of Sossusvlei National Park. It ended up being one of the best experiences of the entire trip &#8211; I absolutely loved it.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Driving:<\/strong> about 4.5 hours (350 km)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stayed at:<\/strong> Sesriem Camp<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tip:<\/strong> Fill up in Solitaire and check your tire pressure &#8211; it\u2019s the last proper stop before Sesriem, and driving on gravel eats up fuel way faster than asphalt!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Day 11: Sossusvlei National Park<\/h2>\n<p>We woke up in the pitch dark, packed up camp, and set off toward Sossusvlei. The first 60 km is a smooth paved road, but the final 5 km requires driving through deep sand, so a proper 4&#215;4 is a must here. We beat most of the crowds, kicked off our shoes, and pushed straight to the top of <strong>Big Daddy<\/strong> as fast as possible. It\u2019s a roughly 6.5 km round-trip climb with around 350 meters of elevation gain.<\/p>\n<p>After a proper photo session on the ridge, we slid down the massive dune into <strong>Deadvlei<\/strong> &#8211; the iconic white clay pan dotted with ancient dead trees. The landscape is vast and incredibly photogenic; if it weren\u2019t for the heat, I could have easily spent the entire day exploring.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Entrance fee: <\/strong>like Etosha<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tip: <\/strong>There is zero shade, and the heat hits fast. Start as early as the park gates open, bring loads of water, and wear a hat!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Days 12 &#8211; 13: Stampriet Area<\/h2>\n<p>Since our road trip went smoothly without any unwanted surprises, we found ourselves with two extra days to spare. I booked a brand-new lodge on the way to Windhoek, and we decided to take it easy there. We had the whole place with a pool to ourselves and took an easy hike through the surrounding hills. Before nightfall, we drove up to a scenic ridge near the <strong>Spreetshoogte Pass<\/strong> to watch the sunset over the dramatic mountain desert.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Driving:<\/strong> around 3 hours (205 km)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Stayed at:<\/strong> Stofpad Lodge (2 nights)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Tip:<\/strong> One night would have been enough to recharge, but if you&#8217;re looking for total peace and a slow pace before heading home, it does the trick.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Day 14: Back to Windhoek<\/h2>\n<p>We stopped for lunch at Lake Oanob Resort, right on the water, where locals fish and picnic &#8211; good food, great views, and a relaxed setting. Our last night was back in Windhoek, where we wandered around a mall and a couple of small churches before flying home the next day. But when you\u2019re heading to an unfamiliar country &#8211; with hundreds of blogs warning you about guaranteed flat tires, unpredictable road conditions, and tricky driving times &#8211; having a couple of spare days is always the smarter play.<\/p>\n<p>That said, to be completely real: <strong>we could have easily packed this entire trip into 12 days.<\/strong> Dropping a day each from Etosha, Swakopmund, and the Stampriet area would have made for a fast-paced itinerary, but we are used to the high-tempo travel anyway.
