Probably more than the average American has seen of their own country &#8211; and I&#8217;m from Europe &#x1f609;. So when people ask me which are the best US national parks, I actually have an answer.<!--more--><\/p>\n<h6><strong>Context<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>I&#8217;m a <strong>hiker and a nature lover<\/strong> at heart, which is exactly where this top 5 comes from &#8211; not city breaks, not theme parks, just trails, views, and the occasional near-death hiking experience (yep, looking at you, Angels Landing!). A few of these parks I&#8217;ve been back to three times, which should tell you everything about how good they are.<\/p>\n<p>One more thing before we dive in: if you&#8217;re reading this from outside the US, the entrance fees below matter more than they used to. As of 2026, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/aboutus\/nonresidentfees.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">non-US residents pay an extra $100 per person<\/a> at 11 of the busiest parks &#8211; including three on my list. I&#8217;ll flag exactly which ones.<\/p>\n<p>Oh, and just to be clear: these aren&#8217;t &#8220;the 5 best national parks in the US&#8221; according to some ranking &#8211; they&#8217;re the 5 I&#8217;d send you to first, based on what I&#8217;ve actually seen with my own eyes.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>1. Yosemite, California<\/strong><\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Entry:<\/strong> $35\/vehicle + $100\/person for non-US residents (16+)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Best time:<\/strong> May, June, September, October<\/li>\n<li><strong>Top things:<\/strong> Tunnel View, Half Dome (permit required), Mist Trail<\/li>\n<li><strong>Where to stay:<\/strong> For last-minute stays and a limited budget, I recommend El Portal &#8211; just 30 min&#8217; from Yosemite Valley<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Yes, it&#8217;s popular, but if you&#8217;re a hiker, Yosemite is non-negotiable. The scale of the place is just ridiculous. We visited in late October (no crowds!) and the Half Dome cables were already closed for the season, so the summit is still on my bucket list. But the roughly 2-hour hike up to Nevada Fall alone delivers views the entire way &#8211; no permit, no drama, just come prepared for a proper climb.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>2. Zion, Utah<\/strong><\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Entry:<\/strong> $35\/vehicle + $100\/person for non-US residents (16+)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Best time:<\/strong> September, October<\/li>\n<li><strong>Top things:<\/strong> Angels Landing, The Narrows, Canyon Overlook Trail<\/li>\n<li><strong>Where to stay:<\/strong> Hurricane or La Verkin &#8211; about 30 min&#8217; from the park entrance, with 40-60% lower rates from Springdale<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Angels Landing is one of my favorite hikes in the US, and I&#8217;ve done it three times now. It still terrifies me every single time, but it&#8217;s 100% worth it. You need a permit (it&#8217;s a lottery system, more on that below). My tip: start early to beat the crowds at the chain section &#8211; trust me, you don&#8217;t want to be queuing on a cliff edge. Denali, Alaska<\/strong><\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Entry:<\/strong> $15\/person (no vehicle fee, and no non-resident surcharge here)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Best time:<\/strong> Mid-June to early September<\/li>\n<li><strong>Top things:<\/strong> Denali viewpoints, wildlife bus tours, Savage River<\/li>\n<li><strong>Where to stay:<\/strong> Healy &#8211; about 15-20 minutes from the park entrance, with much cheaper motels and cabins than the resorts right at the gate.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The weather in Denali (and Alaska, for that matter) is famously unpredictable, but we got lucky. Out of 6 days, we only had 1 hour of light rain in July! Plus, we spotted a grizzly (from a park bus ride) and had a crystal-clear view of Mt. Denali on the same day &#8211; lucky bastards indeed! Alaska is on my return-bucket list for sure.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>4. Grand Teton, Wyoming<\/strong><\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Entry:<\/strong> $35\/vehicle + $100\/person for non-US residents (16+)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Best time:<\/strong> June, September, October<\/li>\n<li><strong>Top things:<\/strong> Jenny Lake, Mormon Row, Schwabacher Landing<\/li>\n<li><strong>Where to stay:<\/strong> Elk Refuge Inn, just outside Jackson &#8211; cozy, clean, and reasonably priced, without Jackson&#8217;s resort-town prices.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Everyone rushes straight to Yellowstone next door and skips its quieter neighbor, which honestly works in your favor. Grand Teton is postcard-perfect from every angle, and visiting in fall means you get all of it without the crowds. Just make sure you check the forecast \u2013 snowstorms can hit as early as late October.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>5. Capitol Reef, Utah<\/strong><\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Entry:<\/strong> $20\/vehicle (no non-resident surcharge here either)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Best time:<\/strong> September, October<\/li>\n<li><strong>Top things:<\/strong> Hickman Bridge, Rim Overlook, Scenic Drive<\/li>\n<li><strong>Where to stay:<\/strong> Torrey &#8211; just 10 min&#8217; from the park entrance. We stayed at the Casitas at Capitol Reef and it was a great and comfortable base.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you don&#8217;t have much time to explore Utah&#8217;s &#8220;red rocks&#8221;, Capitol Reef is a very convenient option that has it all. It is rather small and doesn&#8217;t get Zion or Arches-level crowds, but the views are just as insane, in my opinion. Red rock against yellow cottonwoods in fall is an unbeatable color combo. My tip: hike the 1-hour trail to Rim Overlook &#8211; you&#8217;ll likely have those endless desert views all to yourself.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Before You Go: My General Tips<\/strong><\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Get the right pass.<\/strong> If you&#8217;re planning to visit more than 3 parks (or you travel to the US often), the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/planyourvisit\/passes.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">America the Beautiful annual pass<\/a> is worth it. It costs $80 for US residents, $250 for non-residents. I visited all 17 of my parks before this rule kicked in, when it was still $80 for everyone.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Avoid peak summer.<\/strong> July and August are the most crowded and usually the hottest months at most parks. September and October are my favorites: fewer people, milder weather, better light for photos.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Arrive absurdly early.<\/strong> Parking at popular trailheads fills up by 9 am in peak season, so aim to be there before 7 am. Weekdays also beat weekends by a bigger margin than you&#8217;d think, even during busy months.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Watch out for permits.<\/strong> Some of the best hikes (Angels Landing, Half Dome) need a permit &#8211; either through advance lottery or a day-before draw. The more off-season your visit, the better your odds with the day-before lottery. And don&#8217;t try to sneak past without one &#8211; rangers check constantly.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Download offline maps.<\/strong> Cell service is close to non-existent in most parks, so get AllTrails or Maps.me set up before you go. Also: fill up your gas tank before entering &#8211; gas stations inside parks are rare and painfully overpriced.<\/li>\n<li><strong>E-SIM:<\/strong> Need data for your US trip? A $100-per-person surcharge on top of the regular entrance fee just for not holding a US passport feels less like &#8220;contributing your fair share&#8221; and more like being punished for showing up. These parks are stunning, but until this policy changes, I&#8217;ll be looking at alternatives (Canada, looking at you &lt;3) before I plan my next big US park trip. If enough of us push back on this, maybe something changes. Until then, budget accordingly &#8211; or vote with your travel plans.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Closure<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Seventeen parks down, and I&#8217;m nowhere near done. Washington State with Olympic is high on my list, and Glacier is another one I keep pushing to &#8220;next year.&#8221; And Alaska &#8211; despite Denali making my top 5 &#8211; is so massive that I know I&#8217;ve barely scratched the surface up there.<\/p>\n<p>Loved this list?
