To cut a long story short, I made it safely to the top and back. Is it really that difficult? Is there an easier way to reach the summit? And last but not least, is it worth the trouble? In this post, I will tell you <strong>everything you need to know about the Angels Landing hike<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<div data-paragraph-id=\"paragraph_41DBDD58-AA47-A573-681E-925EF6104CC6\">The Angels Landing hike is <strong>one of the most famous hikes in the US<\/strong> not only for its scenic views but also for its difficulty. While the trail itself isn\u2019t considered technically very demanding, the real challenge lies in your physical and <strong>mental strength<\/strong>. The most intimidating part isn\u2019t the summit itself, but the final spine, which looks incredibly thin from every angle.<\/div>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Location:<\/strong> Zion National Park, Utah<\/li>\n<li><strong>Entrance fee:<\/strong> 35 $ <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/zion\/planyourvisit\/fees.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">per vehicle<\/a> (valid for 7 days)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Difficulty: <\/strong>Strenuous<\/li>\n<li><strong>Hiking Time: <\/strong>3 &#8211; 6 hours (we reached the summit in 1 hour)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Distance: <\/strong>5 miles (8 km) roundtrip<\/li>\n<li><strong>Elevation change: <\/strong>1,488 feet (453 meters)<\/li>\n<li><strong>Summit: <\/strong>790 feet (1.764 m) above sea level<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6><strong>How hard is the Angels Landing hike?<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Angels Landing is considered one of the <strong>most dangerous hikes in the US.<\/strong> However, although it\u2019s described as <strong>difficult<\/strong>, it isn\u2019t technically challenging. For most hikers, it\u2019s more about the <strong>fear of heights and exposed areas<\/strong> than exhaustion or the actual danger of falling. Have people died on Angels Landing? Yes \u2014 there are <strong>casualties<\/strong> almost every year. But it\u2019s also one of the <strong>most crowded hikes<\/strong>, which contributes to the accidents.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em><strong>I&#8217;d say Angels Landing is a challenging hike for occasional hikers and a very difficult hike for tourists and those with fear of heights. The permit was enforced in 2022 to reduce overcrowding on the exposed \u201cchains\u201d section, improve safety, and protect the trail. Zion National Park sees over <strong>5 million visitors per year<\/strong>, which works out to over 10,000 per day on average. &#8220;Only&#8221; <strong>1000<\/strong> per day get the Angels Landing Permit.<\/p>\n<p>The permit is issued through a <strong>lottery system<\/strong> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.recreation.gov\/lottery\/available\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Recreation.gov<\/a>. There are two ways to apply: a seasonal lottery and <strong>a day-before lottery<\/strong>, which is the most common for foreign tourists. To apply, you pay a <strong>$6 non-refundable application fee<\/strong>, and if you win a permit, you\u2019ll pay an additional $3 per person. Once you get it, make sure to download the email confirmation \u2014 cell service in Zion is limited, and rangers will check your permit.<\/p>\n<h6>Hoe to get to Angels Landing trailhead<\/h6>\n<p>During the shuttle season <strong>private vehicles are not allowed<\/strong> on the Zion Canyon Scenic Drive, which leads to the trailhead.\u00a0Shuttles usually run from March through November, so make sure to check <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/zion\/planyourvisit\/zion-canyon-shuttle-system.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the schedule<\/a>. <strong>Park<\/strong> <strong>your car<\/strong> at the Zion National Park Visitor Center (South Entrance) and walk to the shuttle stop. If you\u2019re driving into the park <strong>outside the shuttle season<\/strong>, you can drive into the canyon and park at the Grotto picnic area.<\/p>\n<h6><strong>Angels Landing trail description<\/strong><\/h6>\n<p>Here is my <strong>Angels Landing first-timer\u2019s step-by-step guide<\/strong> to each section of the trail.<\/p>\n<p>Exit at <strong>The Grotto shuttle stop (Stop No. 6)<\/strong> and walk across the bridge over the <strong>Virgin River<\/strong>. Then turn right and simply follow the well-marked trail along the river. From here, you\u2019ll spot the Angels Landing summit for the first time \u2014 and it will look scary AF. Luckily, the first section of the trail is almost flat, so your heart rate can slowly return to normal.<\/p>\n<p>Soon, the trail begins to climb through a series of <strong>switchbacks<\/strong>. Although elevated, it\u2019s quite wide, partially paved, and safe to walk. This is the first section with <strong>gorgeous views of Zion Canyon<\/strong>, but leave those for later &#8211; you\u2019ll have plenty of time to take photos on your way back.<\/p>\n<p>After losing sight of Zion Canyon, you\u2019ll enter <strong>Refrigerator Canyon<\/strong>, carved between the cliffs of Cathedral Mountain and Angels Landing. The scenery here is beautiful, with plenty of trees and plants in different colors, especially in autumn. Soak it up, breathe, and save your energy for what\u2019s coming next.<\/p>\n<p>At about the 1.8-mile (3 km) mark, you\u2019ll reach the famous <strong>Walter\u2019s Wiggles<\/strong> \u2014 a series of <strong>21 steep switchbacks<\/strong> with an average grade of about 25%. This is the point where you may start questioning your fitness level. The good news is that the trail is still paved, wide, and safe.<\/p>\n<p>At the top of Walter\u2019s Wiggles, you\u2019ll arrive at <strong>Scout Lookout.<\/strong> This is where the non-demanding part of the trail ends and where many hikers with vertigo stop. Fortunately, it\u2019s also where you\u2019ll get stunning views of Zion Canyon and the Angels Landing summit.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>Trust me, take your time, go at slow pace, and hike up to Scout Lookout. It\u2019s all about basic climbing skills and conquering your fear of heights. While this is <strong>the most dangerous part of the hike<\/strong>, it\u2019s also the most iconic. The trail is exposed and partly lined with chains to use as handholds. However, the chains don\u2019t cover the entire route, which can be intimidating for some people. For me, the two-way traffic on the exposed sections was the scariest part.<\/p>\n<p>It may feel like forever before you reach the<strong> Angels Landing summit,<\/strong> but when you do, it\u2019s an experience you\u2019ll never forget. Surprisingly, the summit is <strong>quite flat<\/strong>, with enough space to sit down, grab a snack, and enjoy the views. Besides other hikers, you\u2019ll also share the summit with chipmunks. Don\u2019t feed them &#8211; they can bite and may carry diseases.<\/p>\n<p>Finally, you\u2019ll be happy to hear that the <strong>hike back down is much easier<\/strong>, because you get a different perspective of the terrain beneath you. However, the challenging part is <strong>the crowds<\/strong>. The later in the day it gets, the more people start hiking Angels Landing. I&#8217;d avoid hiking to Angels Landing during Winter, in icy conditions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Best time for photography:<\/strong> To catch the Zion Canyon beneath in sunlight: after 10 AM, when the sun is high enough. If you want good portrait light: early morning (around 9 AM) or before sunset.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Toilets:<\/strong> There are bathrooms at The Grotto stop and toilets at the Scout Lookout.<\/li>\n<li><strong>No dogs allowed:<\/strong> I salute this rule. &lt;3<\/li>\n<li><strong>Check the weather:<\/strong> Don&#8217;t hike in\/right after the rain or during the day in hot summer months.<\/li>\n<li><strong>What to wear: <\/strong>Check the forecast, as it can get very chilly and windy in the morning. Dress in layers.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Shoes:<\/strong> Wear proper shoes with a good grip. Some parts are sandy and you don\u2019t want to slip.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Backpack:<\/strong> Try to carry the smallest possible backpack and tighten it as close to your body as possible. It will help you a lot on those climbing and exposed parts.<\/li>\n<li><strong>America the Beautiful annual pass:<\/strong> If you are visiting more national parks, consider buying the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/planyourvisit\/passes.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">annual pass<\/a> for 80 USD.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Where to stay:<\/strong> Springdale is the closest option, but also the most expensive one.
